Lexington Depot District

Lexington, NC, is a former furniture and textile manufacturing city located between Charlotte and Raleigh. As a result of a USDOT Tiger ll planning grant in support of The Southeast High Speed Rail Corridor, the City of Lexington used the funds to not only prepare for regional rail service, but to unlock a failed but now city owned manufacturing site to rebuild and renew its downtown and associated residential districts. A lively and engaging public process among the many communities was employed to plan a future to advance broad community support.

Shook Kelley is part of architectural and master planning team for a Multi-Modal Transportation Station Area Plan that includes architectural, engineering, and environmental services for a new station, passenger platform, associated track alignment, and primary access street improvements in downtown Lexington.

Shook Kelley is also actively engaged with the City of Lexington’s Office of Community Development in areas of Advocacy and Public Engagement, as well thorough Site Analysis and Master Planning for the future District, with the purpose of finding equitable mixed-use solutions for a growing community with innovative methods for creating a transit oriented neighborhood including approximately 65 acres.

The efforts were fundamental to rallying the community around a common cause of enhancing the downtown core of Lexington.

An engaging public process among the many communities was employed by Shook Kelley in the form of multiple workshops to plan a future to advance broad community support. A variety of techniques and presentations were developed and deployed by Shook Kelley based on the topics, the setting, and the personalities involved. Multiple workshop sessions were prepared for the community at large that included elaborate exploratory sessions deploying real-time audience response survey technology. The Planning and Communications Design Teams at Shook Kelley prepared a variety of graphic materials for each session, including the framework for a website dedicated to the planning efforts for the Depot District, which the public could use as an informational go-to point for all planning and design issues surrounding the cause, and to also provide additional input towards creating a vibrant, supported destination that is economically, socially and environmentally beneficial to the area.
